Last.fm has just had a redesign, and it’s a great service. Install the audioscrobbler plugin, and it reports the tracks you play in your chosen media player (iTunes in my case) and logs it all.Where’s the fun in that? It builds up an idea of what you like listening to, and you can download their radio player, and listen to your musical choice from their servers. One better, it recommends new songs based on what is in the playlist of other users with similar taste. It’s a great way of finding new music.

The service is completely free, but for a premium of 1.50 a month (which I think is a bargain) you get priority access to their streaming services, a few extra radio modes and so on.

There’s a comprehensive commentary on Last.fm and social architecture by Stowe Boyd over on corante.com.

Storms were predicted, and despite fork lightning directly overhead for most of the evening, it only rained briefly. Coldplay were fantastic, beginning with ‘Politik’ and ending with ‘Fix You’, and playing stuff from all the albums in between. Support was provided by Morning Runner and Interpol. About 30,000 people tried to get on the same train as us on the way home. Pete and Gaby made it back to West Hampstead by half past midnight; I got back to Oxford about half past two, Simon got home about half three. Eagles has posted the tracklist over on his msn blog.

The burger chain, recently criticised for blatantly targetting youth in its’ advertising campaigns, is to pay rappers $5 / 2.80 each time their song is played on the radio. Maven Strategies, McDonalds marketing company, will have the final say on the lyrics of such songs before release.

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “This partnership reflects our appreciation and respect for the most dominant youth culture in the world.”
